Community Service Opportunities – Living the Second Great Commandment

Dear Highland Stake Friends,

We have a number of opportunities in the coming weeks and over the upcoming holidays to help others feel our love and the love of the Savior. We hope that as these service opportunities are shared, you’ll prayerfully consider how you and your family or friends can participate, recognizing that there are a variety of ways we can serve.  We’ll be sharing these invitations via emails and on our Pocatello Highland Stake Neighbors Facebook and Instagram pages; please consider the best ways for you to help and invite neighbors and friends to join you!

Homeless Stand Down

First, as we’ve done for several years, our stake, and the surrounding stakes in Pocatello, are jumping in to help gather new sleeping bags in support of the Homeless Stand Down event taking place the first weekend in November. This year, we are also gathering some additional clothing items for children, women and men.

If you’d like to donate a new sleeping bag or clothing items, please use this SignUpGenius link (when the screen opens, click on one of the “Sign Up” buttons for a particular item, then click on the “Save and Continue” button that appears to enter the requested information).

The sleeping bags and clothing items need to be delivered to Sister Dee Dee Pattie’s home by Wednesday, October 30th (2435 Coleman St). These donation requests typically fill quite quickly, so if you click on the link and a message indicates the spots are all filled, then the collection is complete.

In addition to sleeping bag and clothing donations, there are other ways to help/volunteer with this event; please check out these opportunities on JustServe.org.

Rake a Difference

Second, we have been invited to come together as a community to support a vital health services provider in our area, the Pocatello Free Clinic (https://pocatellofreeclinic.com/). We’re sharing the information below and an invitation for you, your family, or a group within your ward to jump in and “Rake a Difference”! This program is a fundraiser for the Pocatello Free Clinic and you can get involved and/or volunteer in a couple ways:

  • First, you can volunteer to help rake lawns across our community, with our community friends, for those who have donated to have their lawn raked.
  • Or, you can sign up (register your lawn) and donate and then a group of individuals will come and rake the leaves in your yard!

The upcoming days for this event are Friday and Saturday, November 3rd and 4th and Friday and Saturday November 10th and 11th.

Please visit the Rake a Difference website: https://www.isu.edu/honors/rake/ to register to either help with raking or donate and have your lawn raked!  When you visit the website, click on the words “Sign Up Now” toward the top of the page, then it will take you to links for you to “Register to Volunteer” or “Register a Yard”; there is also a waiver and release form to be completed for volunteers.

President Nelson has taught that, Giving help to others—making a conscientious effort to care about others as much as or more than we care about ourselves—is our joy. Especially, I might add, when it is not convenient and when it takes us out of our comfort zone. Living that second great commandment is the key to becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ.”

Thanks so much for your generosity and support of our brothers and sister in our community!
